Land Acknowledgement
As settlers, we would like to collectively acknowledge the traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of Indigenous people. Maternity Care Midwives is located in Anishinaabe territory on the traditional lands of the Fort William First Nation, signatory to Robinson-Superior treaty of 1850. We would like to thank all generations of people who have cared for this land. We recognize the contributions of Indigenous families in shaping and strengthening this community. We acknowledge the significant and ongoing health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians is the direct result of previous Canadian government policies, as well as past/present racism and colonialism. We are committed to integrating the principles of truth and reconciliation into the daily delivery of midwifery care.
Catchment Area
Our catchment area encompasses a radius approximately a one hour drive outside the city limits of Thunder Bay. We also provide care to clients who live further away, including communities along Highway 11/17 West to Shebandowan and Upsala, and East to communities such as Nipigon, Dorion, Hurkett, Longlac, Geralton, Beardmore, Marathon, and Pic River Reserve & Manitouwadge. Clients who come from communities across Northwestern Ontario must travel to Thunder Bay for their care. Historically, we have partnered with family health teams or nursing stations in the client’s home community to provide shared care and minimize required travel for appointments.
